Portfolio Manager — Free, Open-Source Portfolio & Options Tracker
Portfolio Manager is a free, open-source desktop application that tracks your holdings and the covered calls and cash-secured puts you sell against them, in one place. Local SQLite storage, live prices from Yahoo Finance, no subscription, no account, no cloud sign-up.

Why It Pairs With the Screen
Meridian Screen tells you which stocks are suited to the wheel. Portfolio Manager tells you what happened after you ran it — which puts you sold, which ones were assigned, what premium you actually banked, and how much capital is tied up backing the positions still open. Most brokerage apps show one account at a time and treat options as a separate list from the shares they are written against; spreadsheets fall apart around the third roll. This closes that gap on your own machine.
Covered Calls & Cash-Secured Puts
Options are tracked as first-class positions linked to the underlying shares in your portfolio, not as loose rows in a list:
- Covered call tracking tied directly to the stock you actually hold, so you can see which shares are already committed
- Cash-secured put tracking with the capital requirement calculated per contract, and an available-funds panel showing what is left to sell against
- Full lifecycle status — Open, Expired, Closed, and Exercised — so assignment history stays attached to the resulting share position
- Total premium, net premium, capital requirement, and P&L calculated automatically per contract and per ticker
- Expandable tree view grouped by ticker and sorted by expiry date, with expiry warnings as contracts approach
Sell the Put CSP
Log the cash-secured put and the app reserves the capital requirement against your available funds until it expires or you are assigned.
Assignment
Mark the contract Exercised and the resulting shares carry a cost basis reduced by the premium you collected.
Sell the Call CC
The covered call is linked to those shares, so you always know which part of a holding is uncovered and free to write against.
Portfolio Management
Underneath the options layer is a full position tracker for stocks and ETFs across as many accounts as you hold:
- Add, edit, and delete positions with full buy/sell history and commission recording
- Closed-position history with realised profit and loss calculated automatically
- Automatic stock split and dividend tracking, so cost basis stays accurate over time
- Real-time price updates pulled directly from Yahoo Finance
- A built-in position size calculator for planning trades before you place them
Personal Finance & Budgeting
Premium income only means something next to the rest of your cash flow, so the app includes a personal finance ledger alongside the portfolio tools: a unified transaction ledger with running balance, income and expense tracking with date-range filtering, and financial goals and monthly budgets organised by category.
Tax Management
Portfolio Manager includes dedicated tax tooling for recording capital gains events and generating return summaries, built around Australian capital gains tax rules. The portfolio, options, and personal finance features are useful to any investor regardless of jurisdiction — the tax module is the one component tailored specifically to Australian tax law.
Analytics & Reporting
- Portfolio analytics dashboard covering performance over time
- Benchmark comparison against major indices
- Portfolio optimisation tools
- Performance tracking with integrated news
Built With Open Technology
The app is written entirely in Python and is fully open source, so you can inspect exactly how your data is handled or contribute improvements yourself:
| Layer | Technology |
|---|---|
| Language | Python 3.13 |
| User interface | PySide6 (Qt), dark theme |
| Data storage | SQLite + SQLAlchemy — stored locally on your machine |
| Market data | yfinance (Yahoo Finance) |
| Analytics | pandas, numpy, pyqtgraph for charting |
| Testing | pytest |
Database backup and restore and persistent application settings are built in, so your history survives reinstalls and upgrades.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Portfolio Manager really free?
Yes — it's free for personal use and the source code is public on GitHub. There is no subscription, account creation, or paywalled feature tier.
Does it track covered calls and cash-secured puts?
Yes. Both are tracked as first-class positions linked to the underlying shares, with total and net premium, capital requirement, P&L, expiry warnings, and status through Open, Expired, Closed, and Exercised.
What platforms does it run on?
It ships as a Windows installer. It is written in Python with PySide6, so it can also be run from source on other platforms, though the packaged installer targets Windows.
Is my financial data private?
Portfolio, options, and budget data is stored in a local SQLite database on your own machine. The only outbound calls are to Yahoo Finance to fetch market prices.
Does it work outside Australia?
The portfolio tracking, options management, and personal finance features work for any investor. The dedicated tax module is built around Australian capital gains tax rules, so investors elsewhere would handle tax reporting separately.
Where can I get support or report a bug?
The project is hosted on GitHub, where you can open an issue or read the release notes for each version.
